Date/Time: September 29th 9:00 am Topic/Skill: Speaking Teacher Presentation: The teacher, Andrew Wilson, had a fun filled day planned for the students, since it was a twi hour long class. He started the class of by giving the students a WOTD (Word of the Day). He called upon students to try and guess the meaning of the word. He then presented the students with an American board game called  Taboo.  The class was divided into two teams and the words were presented by student volunteers. It was nice seeing the students get involved and excited to play. They were getting very competitive and saying funny side remarks to their opponents. After they completed a few rounds of the game. The class moved on to the next activity which was small group discussions. The students needed to choose a topic that they felt comfortable talking about and hopefully had some background knowledge on. After choosing their topics, we moved to the computer lab where they were a lotted 20 minutes to ...

Date/Time: September 27th, 3pm Location: Hecht House Topic discussed: This past week, sports, pets, campus transportation Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: We talked about words he had written down from class, but didn't remember well. I used youtube to show him some sports he hadn't heard of. He also asked me about where he could watch tv to practice English, and I showed him some websites he could use here.

Date/Time: September 27th, 5pm Location: Hecht House Topic/Skill: Past Tense vs Past Perfect Tense vs Past Perfect Continuous Test, Speaking Feedback provided to tutee: I was hesitant to over correct since she had seemed so nervous about speaking in our last session. She did speak much more freely this time, though, so next session I will ask her if it's okay for me to correct her speech. Especially since she asked me to help her practice speaking. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: Bringing a computer opens up a world of activities in case the planned activity ends early. We talked about some of my old embarrassing facebook photos together, and used google maps to show each other where we grew up. I think this really made speaking more enjoyable for her.

Date/Time: September 27th, 4pm Location:  Hecht House Topic/Skill: Introductions, Goals Feedback provided to tutee: I provided words when he needed them, and spelled them so he could write them down. I need to ask him next time if it's okay for me to correct his speech, though. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: It's very easy, especially during a first meeting, for me to focus too much on being supportive and forgetting to correct mistakes. This is so ingrained in me, so long as I can understand what he is saying, I barely even notice the mistakes. I'll need to practice active listening in the future.

Tutoring Session #2: Lunch Time CIES Date: September 27, 2017 Topic/Skill: Pronunciation During lunch, several students would come and go from the computer lab in order to use the software off the computer to improve upon their pronunciation. For the first portion of lunch I watched the instructor’s explanations when walking around the room answering the various questions from the students. The instructor said to jump in whenever it looked like a student was really lost. One of my tutee’s was using the software program so I had a chance to work with him on a few of the sentences. He had trouble the the b and th sounds at the beginning of sentences as well as pronouncing g at the end of words like dog or dug. I would have him try the sentence first, then I would reiterate the phrase especially where he could use improvement. After that he would re-submit the recording and move on to the next question.

Classroom Observation: Sana McHarek Date: September 27, 2017 Reading 4A Presentation: Class began by reviewing a comprehension quiz students had done last class on the article they are currently reading, about lightening in Florida. This article, and all articles in the class, are longform articles meant to be discussed in stages over several days. Today's stage of reading is post-reading. Sana introduces the outline note-taking method and tasks students to go in and fill in an outline of the article. Then Sana segued into literary devices, including metaphor, simile, and finally, onomatopoeia. She wrote two metaphors on the board ("he is a shining star" and "the world is a stage") and asked students what made them metaphors, and what each metaphor meant. She then did the same with simile. For onomatopoeia, she used the title of the article which was onomatopoeic, and spends some time helping students understand and pronounce this difficult term. She ask...

Classroom Observation: Hunter Pelt Date: September 22, 2017 (stayed for first half of Friday class) Composition 1A Presentation: The warmup activity was to describe a picture on the board and journal feelings provoked for the first ten minutes. Assignments were passed back ungraded so students knew how they were doing before a test and can work on specific details for the future. Classroom Management: Hunter managed the classroom well by using a mixture of materials in the room with open conversation in the circular classroom style set up. Materials: Projector, textbook, journal Student Participation: He asked a lot of open ended questions to get the students to participate. Some of them included: What is a paragraph? Topic sentences? Looking at a paragraph, what is different about the structure of the sentences? Feedback Provided: Hunter’s classroom had a very relaxing atmosphere upon entry. Classical music was playing during their journaling time and he had brownies ...

Classroom Observation: Ryan Flemming Date: September 22, 2017 (stayed for both sessions on Friday) Grammar 3B Presentation: Ryan showed the class the plan for the day so that there were no surprises and the class knew what to expect before and after the halfway point class break. I enjoyed his warm up activity where the students worked in pairs to correct each other’s sentences from a previous class. The correct answers were discussed as a whole and the students took photos of the corrections to study for an upcoming quiz. Classroom Management: Ryan was vigilant in using a timer on the computer to keep small group and large group discussion on time. Materials: Ryan used handouts, their binders, white board, document projected from the computer. Student Participation: This class was definitely student and classroom centered. The students were participating without being nagged or asked to. Feedback Provided: I liked how one of the activities involved a competition f...
