Ford Brodeur CO #3
Date/Time : 9/27/17 10:00am
Topic/Skill : Integrated Writing
Teacher Presentation : She taught in deduction style teaching. She was working with the students about how to prepare for the practice TOEFL practice exam they were gonna take next week. She would do a warm-up that would consist of outlining a question. After that, she would then go into the main lesson of the day (Integrated Writing). Students would also listen to a lecture and take notes on it. Mrs. McHarek would prepare her students by giving lots of practice work on integrated writing.
Classroom Management : She was able to handle the classroom very efficiently. The teacher was able to handle a prospective troublemaker in the class. Sana would divert his questions and made sure it did not affect the class.
Materials : Projector, powerpoint, class-handouts, lecture audio, timer.
Student Participation : Student Participation was very active. Students were always writing or planning throughout the class. Since there was a mix of levels in the group 3 (Intermediate and High Intermediate). It was very apparent that some of the students were of a higher skill level and Mrs. McHarek would then accommodate them by assigning them more work.
Feedback Provided : All the feedback that was provided was positive washback. She would answer students politely and give them the feedback that is needed. She would use a method of slight explicit feedback where she would nit-pick the students. However, this type of feedback did not occur during most of the class because she was preparing them for the TOEFL practice exam. The feedback for most of the class during the practice was very encouraging.
Lessons on teaching you learned : The lessons I learned from teaching is that practice is key and its important to bring worksheets. The students were annoyed by doing all this work but Mrs. McHarek would tell her students that all the practice was necessary in order to make strides. She said this was the most effective way of preparing for the TOEFL practice exam this next Thursday. I noticed also how much more prepared the students were in writing when they had their own tangible copy of the prompt for classwork. It really enabled them to do their work well and to be able to take their own notes on the subject on the prompt.
