Topic/Skill:
Writing an Article Critique
Ailin expressed
concern to me about her reading final project on writing an article critique. I
had briefly helped her with similar questions on shorter article critiques in
the past. I find it very interesting that Ailin thrives in speaking and
struggles in reading, while Mohammad is the exact opposite. I’ve really enjoyed
these varying viewpoints because it has made me understand that each student
has their various advantages and disadvantages in the classroom and each should
be approached differently. I was able to proofread Ailin’s one page typed
critique and chat with her about the reasons for a few of my corrections or questions
I had written on the side of the text. Overall, I believe she benefited from my
direction proofreading because she said that is what she wanted and she wants
to know exactly what is appropriate or awkward in her writing. I tried to be as
descriptive and constructive as possible, while also noting a few of the things
she thrived in.
I completed a second draft review and had a separate conversation with her about continued improvements on critiquing articles. This took time to actually review the paper and also relay my information and corrections back to her. All and all this took close to two hours for this assignment total which is why I designated this as two tutoring sessions.
