Session #11-16
Date: Spring
2018
Topic/Skill:
IMC Program
At the end of
the fall semester, my fall conversation partner Ailin, reached out to me about
her acceptance into the IMC Master’s program. I am currently a second semester
student in the IMC program. This truly has made this tutoring and conversation
partner experience come together because I can now help Ailin apply her English
skills to the classroom. For the spring 2018 semester, we both share a Research
Methods course. Ailin expressed her anxiety about the lecture style course. Our
professor is 70 years old and typically speaks in a lower tone of voice.
Additionally, he is from Kentucky and has a relatively strong southern accent.
Since the start of the semester I have compared my notes with Ailin’s to fill
in any gaps of confusion she may have. While the professor has a powerpoint
slide during lectures, his style of teaching requires intense auditory
listening. I even find it difficult at times to not only listen to the
instructor, but also jot down the notes in a timely fashion. I am looking
forward to working with Ailin on a common goal of achieving a good grade in a
class we share.
