Tova Ervin - TS#13

Date/Time: October 30th, 3pm
Location: Hecht House
Topic/Skill: Writing
Feedback provided to tutee: We went through her paper paragraph by paragraph to discuss major grammatical mistakes. When it was things I thought she might have learned already, I just asked her to look at it and think about what needed to be fixed. For instance, when she forgot a verb or used the wrong tense. For more specific aspects of English, I provided her with feedback, even though some things were very specific, since she had asked for that information.
Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:
Simple explanations are so important. I'm the type of person who loves to know the reason behind things, so sometimes in my explanations I think I went a bit too in detail about grammar rules. She really wanted to improve, so I think at first she may have wanted this information. However, I found that after a few of these longer explanations, she seemed a bit tired and defeated. I'm going to try harder in the future to give brief explanations first, and only clarify more if the student asks for it or if the simple explanation wasn't adequate.
