Activity: Field Trip
When I observed Calyns foundation level speaking class she had planned for her students to take a field trip to an apartment complex to ask the super questions about the apartment building, things they could and and could not have, what was included in the apartment, how much it cost etc. We went walking to the apartment complex. It was about ten minutes walking form CIES. On the way there Calyn told her students that we would only be talking in English on the excursion. For the most parts the students followed this rule. It was very interesting to see the students interact, there were no students from Asia just from South America and the Middle East. But when talking to each other they didn’t separate by the language they spoke but rather all commingled and tried their best to speak english with each other. When they didn’t know a word they would ask someone what it was in their native language and then continue with their conversation in english. When we got the apartment complex all the students had three or four questions to ask the super. One of the students asked “Where is the chicken?” trying to say the word kitchen. All of the students laughed and then told him the word that he was trying to say. None of the students made fun of him to the point where he was super embarrassed, but to where i think he learned from his mistake and will never say chicken instead of kitchen again. Once the students were done asking their question we walked back to CIES only talking in english once again. Calyn stopped the class about halfway back asking what they learned through their question about the apartment making sure the students remembered that this wasn’t just a fun outing but a learning experience.
