CP#5 Ryan Milejczak

Date/Time: November 5th, 5pm-6pm
Location: Black Dog on The Square
Topic discussed: Religion, Culture, Language
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Met up with Max/Mubarak for coffee at Black Dog. As always, I'm surprised and impressed with the level of Max's English skills, and I find it almost hard to believe he hasn't been studying it longer. Complimented him on his English skills, which lead to us talking about learning languages, and how hard it can be. This lead to a discussion on regional differences in languages, comparing US and Uk English, and Kuwaiti and Moroccan Arabic. He noted that, while he can understand Arabic when spoken by people who are from countries close to Kuwait, such as Saudi Arabia or Qatar, when he speaks to a Moroccan Arabic speaker, he can barely understand them. From there we transitioned to talking about culture and differences between American and Kuwait. Talked about how family is an extremely important part of live in Kuwait, and he was surprised when I said I didn't want to have kids, and wasn't sure if I'd ever get married even. He said that, in Kuwait, most people get married right out of high school, and start having kids almost immediately after. Also talked about how there is no alcohol to be found in Kuwait due to Islam, and we talked a bit about drinking culture in the US. He mentioned he had tried beer and thought it was really gross, and we talked a bit about acquired tastes. Also just talked a bit generally about traveling and different places in the world we've been or wanted to go. I talked about how I'm going to South Korea, and he talked about how he's  never been to the UAE and has always wanted to go, and noted it's so close he can get there very easily from Kuwait.
