CP #4 Ryan Milejczak
Date/Time: November 3rd, 5pm-6pm
Location: The Globe
Topic discussed: Religion and Travel
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Ran into Max/Mubarak at International Coffee Hour at The Globe. Started off talking about his plans for winter break, and he said he'd be traveling to Kuwait, which got us talking about travelling, particularly flying. Talked about my trip to Nepal from a few years ago and how it had taken 36 hours of travel. Max said going to Kuwait takes a while, but not quite that long. We transitioned into talking about holidays, and he taught me a bit about Eid and Ramadan, and I taught him about Christmas, Lent, and Easter. This lead into a topic about religion in general. I talked to him about Catholicism vs Protestantism, and briefly mentioned the Protestant Revolution and differences between sects of Christianity. He talked a bit about Sunni versus Shia Islam. He himself is Sunni, and he expressed the fact that he thought Shia was a bit strange compared to Sunni, but also admitted he didn't know all that much about the exact differences (or possibly didn't know how to express those differences politely, which is the impression I got from talking to him.) Also talked a bit about life in Kuwait, and how much larger families tend to be there; Max is one of 10 children, and he says that's fairly common for a Kuwaiti family.
