Victoria Jones CO #3
Classroom Observation: Hunter Pelt
Date: September 22, 2017
(second half of Friday class)
Composition 1A
Presentation: Hunter had the
students read small paragraphs on the board and talk about their thoughts on
the question or topic. This made the students think about what the true topic
of the paragraph was and which answer choice provided the correct topic
sentence. Many of the students struggled with the concept of finding the
thesis, but each question was broken down in a way that made sure the students
understood the ‘why’ behind each thesis before moving on.
Classroom Management: Hunter
not only instructed the students to write in their journals, but also had them
reading phrases on the board and sharing their thoughts and opinions. I thought
this was a great opportunity to have the students use all aspects of their
language and not sit there writing the entire class period.
Materials: Projector,
textbook, journal
Student Participation: While some students
appeared more shy than others, whether it was in small groups or in the lecture
discussion, all of the students were paying attention to the task at hand.
Feedback Provided: Overall, the students
seemed very engaged and were willing to participate without being called on.
Lessons on Teaching: Even
though the Friday class day is a longer period of time, it is possible to keep
the students engaged by providing short brain breaks and switching up the
activities so they aren’t bored or disengaged.
