Location: Sabal Palm Elementary
Topic/Skill: Reading + Listening
Student: Daniel Kilozo
Level: 2nd grade

For today's activity with Daniel I again was reading a test for him. While reading through, did frequent comprehension checks to make sure he was following, for example, having him hold up the number of fingers that matches the number I just read, or point to it on a number line. Also had him repeat various things after me. While doing this, also made sure to coax Daniel into speaking whenever possible; the biggest concerns I hear from his teachers (as well as the teachers of his younger brother, who I am also tutoring) is simply that it's difficult to get Daniel to speak, and when he does, he does so very quietly. So, with any question I asked him, or any statement I made, I made sure he responded out loud and clearly. I'm still getting a grasp of Daniel's English skills, as his quiet and shy nature makes it a bit hard to suss out exactly where he's at, but I'm starting to build a rapport with him and so hopefully he will start opening up, and next week I hope to do something with him besides reading to him.
