TP #7 Ryan Milejczak

Date: Oct. 16
Location: Sabal Palm Elementary
Topic/Skill: Reading + Writing
Student: Irvin Menjivar
Level: 2nd grade

Sat down with Irvin today and worked on a reading exercise with him, wherein he read a passage about a charity started by Hard Rock Cafe. We read along and I helped him with difficult vocab and pronunciation. Then, had him write down specific vocab words that were highlighted in the text and had him:

A. Write a definition in his own words based on how the word is used.

B. Write out the definition of the word as found in a dictionary.
C. Use the word in a sentence.

Although he struggled with many of  the words as any 2nd grader would, Irvin has the best English skills, at least with respect to speaking, of any of the students I've tutored so far, and he was excited to engage me in discussion, and I was happy to oblige him a little bit, but made sure it didn't cut into lesson time too much. Learned his family is from El Salvador, but he has lived most of his life in the US, which is likely why his English is so good. Worth noting, as well, that he is my alternate student for this class, and my usual student is not quite so advanced.
