Ryan Milejczak TS #1
Date/Time : 9/27 12:00pm to 1:00 pm
Location : CIES Centre
Topic/Skill : Informational/Explanatory Writing
Feedback provided to the Tutee : I held an open tutoring session during CIES's lunch hour, during which I had one student come up to me for help. Margie brought me a draft of her paper that she wanted help revising, and in particular, needed help honing in her grammatical mistakes. Her most common error was dropping pronouns before verbs. After learning that Margie was a Portuguese speaker I correctly guessed that, like Spanish, pronouns are often dropped in her first language, and so noted for her to pay extra attention to that as her most common mistake. Also helped her make her writing more legible, and showed her how to better construct sentences in English writing.

Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that knowing some details about a student's native language can help assist them with improving common mistakes in their second language.
