In this session I worked with Sabal Palm Elementary student Henry Alas-Garcia. Today he was working on a reading exercise, wherein he read a passage that explained the forces of acceleration, friction, inertia, and gravity, and then had to do a few short response comprehension questions. Henry is clearly very bright; he seemed to have no trouble with the reading, and got through it all quite fast. He did, however, struggle a bit with writing, so I had to coax certain answer out of him. We worked through the exercise together, with me helping him with the few reading difficulties he did have (the word "inertia" gave him some trouble), and then helping him with grammar and spelling on the short responses.  Initially he was quite shy (I tried to simply talk to him to get an idea of his English skills, but had trouble getting him to say anything), but after working on the lesson a bit he opened up more and displayed an already impressive command of the language.

Date: Oct. 18 Location: Sabal Palm Elementary Topic/Skill: Reading Student: Jaques Kilozo Level: 1st grade For today's session with Jaques, I sat down to help him with a class activity wherein he had to cut out shapes of animals and glue them to a venn diagram stating whether they lived in the water, on land, or both. This was a good chance to work on having him identify things out loud in English, so with each animal I had him tell me out loud the name, and had him repeat it until it was said at a decent volume, as his biggest concern from his teacher is that he doesn't speak much, and when he does, he whispers. Then, did a little listening exercise where I read to him for a little bit until a fire drill cut our session a bit short.

Tutoring Session #11-16 Date: Spring 2018 Topic/Skill: IMC Program At the end of the fall semester, my fall conversation partner Ailin, reached out to me about her acceptance into the IMC Master’s program. I am currently a second semester student in the IMC program. This truly has made this tutoring and conversation partner experience come together because I can now help Ailin apply her English skills to the classroom. For the spring 2018 semester, we both share a Research Methods course. Ailin expressed her anxiety about the lecture style course. Our professor is 70 years old and typically speaks in a lower tone of voice. Additionally, he is from Kentucky and has a relatively strong southern accent. Since the start of the semester I have compared my notes with Ailin’s to fill in any gaps of confusion she may have. Date / Time : 10/23/17  12:15pm Location : CIES Centre Topic / Skill : Writing and preliminary issues to writing Feedback provided to the Tutee : I met Hani while I was eating lunch yesterday at the CIES centre. We struck up a conversation on Tallahassee and then asked if I could possibly answer some questions on writing. He asked what are the best ways to improve his writing and I replied it depended on what specifically he would like to improve. His biggest issues that he was struggling with was the speed of writing and spelling errors. I suggested taking timed writing exercises by which he could practice spelling and writing as quickly as possible. Lessons learned : I learned that our alphabet is truly not as easy as it looks.
