Strozier Library
Topics/Skills: I met
Saeed in the library where he was studying with my conversation partner Suoltan
for their upcoming exams. I ended up staying there for two hours with him
working through each skill and various examples. First, we went over idioms and
vocabulary for his speaking class. We then went through a worksheet for his
listening class where he would have to figure out a specific word in a sentence
based on its context. The last activity we worked on was correcting sentences
with errors.
Feedback provided: I attempted to provide explanations and
examples for the idioms and vocabulary words he had trouble with, how to attain
meaning from context and build his ambiguity tolerance, and why a sentence had
to be structured a certain way.
Lessons learned: Saeed is in higher levels of speaking and
listening, but he struggles a lot with grammar, so it’s really difficult to try
and explain why a sentence has to be structured a certain way in his
listening/speaking activities when he doesn’t have the basic grammar knowledge
to understand these structures. For our next meeting, I’m going to try to focus
on simple grammar concepts instead of just working through worksheets or
activities he has.
