Topic / Skill : Letter recognition

Feedback provided to the tutee : I was able to give feedback to the tutee (Chrispe) but it was hard. He was in Kindergarten and he had the most basic foundational level of english. We were tasked to help Chrispe learn the alphabet and be able to help him with letter recognition. The letters that Chrispe was being tested on were "s,a,m,p". I brought a pen and paper and went over what each word sounded like and asked Chrispe if he was able to re-create the letter in his own handwriting (this was easier said than done). I used positive reinforcement to keep his confidence up and I tried doing error correction on him (the what method), but he did not understand what I was doing and simply reverted to drawing instead of learning.

Lessons Learned about/from tutoring : I thought this was actually one of the harder tutoring sessions that I have done. The tutee was at such a basic foundational level that I found it hard to bring up background knowledge. Also, the tutee was so young (Kindergartener), that it was very hard to keep him focused. I am thinking/hoping I will get better the more I volunteer at the school.
