Cultural and linguistic things that were learned : I was intrigued by what job that Abdulaziz had and how exactly he got to America. His backstory included finishing college then going from a period of no job and then to his current job (computer programmer) that let him learn English in America. I was amazed to find this out. We started to go over cultural misinterpretations. Some subtitles in that Abdulaziz was watching were incorrectly translated in a movie. I was actually impressed because he noticed this and what words he heard differed from the translation. In the movie, the character said the word "hurt" and the Arabian translation was for the word "harm". I had to explain to Abdulaziz that these words depended on context. I was still very impressed nonetheless. Abdulaziz started to ask me cultural questions that pertained to rumours about Mexicans and their judicial system. He knew that this was a stereotype for Mexicans to have a flawed judicial and government. I had to give the most simplest explanation as to why Mexico has the judicial system that they have now. I proceeded to give a brief geopolitical lesson of Mexican crime cartels and how by having money can lead to bribes or a flawed criminal system. Moreover, we went over the difference between Cinemas and Movie Theatres. There is no difference conceptually, but from a vocabulary standpoint most Native Speakers use the term "Movie Theatres" rather than the Cinema. Abdulaziz said that Bahrain has a lot of Cinemas and they are very cheap.

This was a good chance to work on having him identify things out loud in English, so with each animal I had him tell me out loud the name, and had him repeat it until it was said at a decent volume, as his biggest concern from his teacher is that he doesn't speak much, and when he does, he whispers. Then, did a little listening exercise where I read to him for a little bit until a fire drill cut our session a bit short.

Tutoring Session #11-16 Date: Spring 2018 Topic/Skill: IMC Program At the end of the fall semester, my fall conversation partner Ailin, reached out to me about her acceptance into the IMC Master’s program. I am currently a second semester student in the IMC program. This truly has made this tutoring and conversation partner experience come together because I can now help Ailin apply her English skills to the classroom. For the spring 2018 semester, we both share a Research Methods course. Ailin expressed her anxiety about the lecture style course. Our professor is 70 years old and typically speaks in a lower tone of voice. Additionally, he is from Kentucky and has a relatively strong southern accent. Since the start of the semester I have compared my notes with Ailin’s to fill in any gaps of confusion she may have. Date / Time : 10/23/17  12:15pm Location : CIES Centre Topic / Skill : Writing and preliminary issues to writing Feedback provided to the Tutee : I met Hani while I was eating lunch yesterday at the CIES centre. We struck up a conversation on Tallahassee and then asked if I could possibly answer some questions on writing. He asked what are the best ways to improve his writing and I replied it depended on what specifically he would like to improve. His biggest issues that he was struggling with was the speed of writing and spelling errors. I suggested taking timed writing exercises by which he could practice spelling and writing as quickly as possible. Lessons learned : I learned that our alphabet is truly not as easy as it looks. I never really thought about how hard our alphabet is to understand and to write. I didn't really think about it as well until he handed his phone to me to put in my contact information.
