Ford Brodeur CP #2

Date/Time : 9/27/17  5:45pm
Location : FSU Campus (near Wellness Centre)
Topic Discussed : Saudi Arabia, Future, random passerby conversations
Cultural or Linguistic topics that you or your partner have learned : Abdulaziz and I were supposed to initially meet near Dirac library but he got lost due to the complexity of Apple Maps. After I found him near the Wellness Centre, we began our conversations. I asked him about his day and how he was doing. He said he is doing very well and he is still enjoying school. The English that he was using at the beginning of the conversation was very hard to understand and he seemed frustrated from trying to communicate with me. I told him it was alright and just to calm down and I will try to figure out what he was saying to the best of my abilities. He mellowed out after hearing that and he began to talk more. Our spot was a very interesting spot to have a conversation because it was a high traffic area and he would hear new vocabulary words from people that would pass by. He would hear the words like "savage" and he would ask me what that meant. I told him it all depended upon the context of what the person was saying.
Since I am in International Affairs, I have heard that Saudi Arabia just allowed women to drive now. I was intrigued about this and decided to ask Abdulaziz on his opinion because he is from Saudi Arabia. Abdulaziz told me that most people in Saudi Arabia thought that women should drive and that the resistance from women not driving came from people in the centre of the country where it was not as heavily populated. With the change of subject, Abdulaziz asked me about my major and what I planned to do after FSU. I told him that I was an International Affairs major and I wanted to go to graduate school. Abdulaziz did not know what grad school was at first but after some explanation on my part, he soon understood what it was. I told him that I wanted to pursue getting a degree in I.A. and eventually working for human rights. Being from Saudi Arabia, he did not fully understand what human rights were, but I explained it dealt with freedom and equality.
One thing I noticed was that Abdulaziz would often write with his hands in the air to help him express English. I told him to keep doing that because it would help him articulate what he is trying to say. Moreover, after just a simple conversation with Abdulaziz, he seemed more confident on his English. For feedback, I told him he needs to practicing speaking English more. I suggested speaking to friends that he had in class or making American friends so he can practice English.
