Ryan Milejcak CP #2
Date/Time: October 1st, 5:00pm
Location: Starbucks
Topic discussed: Halloween, things to do in Tallahassee and Orlando, American culture
Cultural and/or linguistic topics you and your partner learned:
While I had pulled up a discussion activity provided for conversation partners, Talal and I ended up not doing the activity and instead had a more general discussion about various topics he wanted to know more about. His first question for me was about Halloween, which he didn't fully understand. Told him when it was and what people generally do in Halloween. I asked him if he would be wearing a costume and he said no, but I encouraged him to give it a try! He also wanted to talk about Orlando, where I am from and where he will be visiting in a couple weeks. Told him about some concert venues and restaurants in Orlando that I like a lot, and we talked about Disney and Universal for a bit. In talking with him about theme parks and what Orlando is like, the topic of politeness and rudeness came up. He didn't know the words "rude" and "polite" so I explained them to him, explaining types of behavior that were rude and polite, and relating them to the words "respectful" and "disrespectful" which he knew already. Closed out by talking about the weather a bit, as Talal was curious what fall and winter were like in Tallahassee. He was worried about it being very cold, as, being from Kuwait, Talal is not accustomed to especially cold winters. I reassured him that winter in Tallahassee was very mild.
