Topic discussed: Huaching Shi is a Ph.D. student in the
history department at FSU and I just graduated with a history degree from FSU
so we got to talk a lot about the history program and several professors that
we shared. We also discussed why he came
to America and a little bit about the communist party in China. He moved to America to get better at English
and to study history at Florida State.
Cultural and/or
linguistic topics you and your partner learned: Most of the cultural
aspects of our discussion were about the communist party in China. He did not like that party but he thought
that it was improving. He told me a
story about how one person who was a son of a police officer drove through a
crowd of people at his university. The
person was not punished because his family was well known in the party. He also talked a lot about the pollution in
China. He lives in the mountains but
it’s actually a factory town. The
pollution is so bad that everyone got sick in the summer because the smog was
so bad. This was another one of the main
reasons that he left China.
