Victoria's Conversation Partner #2: Ailin Xia

Location: Bento Restaurant
Topics Discussed: During my classroom observation on the 22nd I was able to meet Ailin’s boyfriend, Feng, who is also from Beijing. I picked both of them up from class and we made our way to Bento for lunch. It was fun to help them figure out their order from the menu and be able to describe and explain some of the ingredients. Feng is in a lower level group with his English and I was trying to make the conversation as inclusive as possible between the three of us. We all went to New Orleans during the hurricane. We shared our experiences during the week off as Ailin and Feng went to New York City as well.


Cultural/Linguistic Topics Learned: Both Ailin and Feng used chopsticks during lunch and I joked with them that I am useless with my chopstick skills. They gave me pointers on the proper Chinese etiquette. Everytime I meet up with Ailin I am able to help her, but she also teaches me so much about her culture.

This was a good chance to work on having him identify things out loud in English, so with each animal I had him tell me out loud the name, and had him repeat it until it was said at a decent volume, as his biggest concern from his teacher is that he doesn't speak much, and when he does, he whispers. Then, did a little listening exercise where I read to him for a little bit until a fire drill cut our session a bit short.

Tutoring Session #11-16 Date: Spring 2018 Topic/Skill: IMC Program At the end of the fall semester, my fall conversation partner Ailin, reached out to me about her acceptance into the IMC Master’s program. I am currently a second semester student in the IMC program. This truly has made this tutoring and conversation partner experience come together because I can now help Ailin apply her English skills to the classroom. For the spring 2018 semester, we both share a Research Methods course. Ailin expressed her anxiety about the lecture style course. Our professor is 70 years old and typically speaks in a lower tone of voice. Additionally, he is from Kentucky and has a relatively strong southern accent. Since the start of the semester I have compared my notes with Ailin’s to fill in any gaps of confusion she may have. Date / Time : 10/23/17  12:15pm Location : CIES Centre Topic / Skill : Writing and preliminary issues to writing Feedback provided to the Tutee : I met Hani while I was eating lunch yesterday at the CIES centre. We struck up a conversation on Tallahassee and then asked if I could possibly answer some questions on writing. He asked what are the best ways to improve his writing and I replied it depended on what specifically he would like to improve. His biggest issues that he was struggling with was the speed of writing and spelling errors. I suggested taking timed writing exercises by which he could practice spelling and writing as quickly as possible. Lessons learned : I learned that our alphabet is truly not as easy as it looks.
