Topic/Skill: Introductions, Strengths/Weaknesses,
Motivations
Ammar and I spoke briefly about his background in English,
his family, and his motivations for studying English. Ammar is from Saudi
Arabia and has been living with his older sister in Tallahassee for about 6
months now, who is studying to get her PhD. He struggles the most with speaking
and reading, but his favorite topic is grammar. I worked with him briefly on
his next speaking assignment, which requires him to discuss a topic of global
importance. His topic was “receiving a quality education.”
Feedback Provided: The most feedback that I provided him
with was just in discussing his speaking topic. He had his topic idea but
hadn’t gotten any further with it, so I helped him to brainstorm points about
why education is important.
Lessons about Tutoring: It’s pretty much impossible if there
is nothing concrete to focus on, so coming prepared with a couple of short
activity ideas could be helpful for getting a better idea of what the student
needs, especially if they don’t know themselves.
