Topics Discussed: This was Suoltan and I’s first meeting, and we both got along really well! We discussed our families and his life back home—he’s from Kuwait, has five siblings, and considers himself to be Muslim. He also talked a lot about his friends, relationships, and the various dynamics going on with the other students at CIES.

Cultural/Linguistic Topics Learned: I learned that in Kuwait, it’s very common if not required for a man to buy a woman their coffee/food if they go/meet somewhere, even if they’re not dating. This was a very interesting and valuable piece of information as one of my tutees had tried to do the same for me, and I was a bit confused! We talked about greetings, the typical one in Kuwait being to kiss on both cheeks, but only for men of course. He asked a lot about my opinions as far as dating culture in the U.S. He was quite frustrated with the idea of casual dating but also expressed frustration about his home culture as well, the reasons being polar opposites.

This was a good chance to work on having him identify things out loud in English, so with each animal I had him tell me out loud the name, and had him repeat it until it was said at a decent volume, as his biggest concern from his teacher is that he doesn't speak much, and when he does, he whispers. Then, did a little listening exercise where I read to him for a little bit until a fire drill cut our session a bit short.

Tutoring Session #11-16 Date: Spring 2018 Topic/Skill: IMC Program At the end of the fall semester, my fall conversation partner Ailin, reached out to me about her acceptance into the IMC Master’s program. I am currently a second semester student in the IMC program. This truly has made this tutoring and conversation partner experience come together because I can now help Ailin apply her English skills to the classroom. For the spring 2018 semester, we both share a Research Methods course. Ailin expressed her anxiety about the lecture style course. Our professor is 70 years old and typically speaks in a lower tone of voice. Additionally, he is from Kentucky and has a relatively strong southern accent. Since the start of the semester I have compared my notes with Ailin’s to fill in any gaps of confusion she may have. Date / Time : 10/23/17  12:15pm Location : CIES Centre Topic / Skill : Writing and preliminary issues to writing Feedback provided to the Tutee : I met Hani while I was eating lunch yesterday at the CIES centre. We struck up a conversation on Tallahassee and then asked if I could possibly answer some questions on writing. He asked what are the best ways to improve his writing and I replied it depended on what specifically he would like to improve. His biggest issues that he was struggling with was the speed of writing and spelling errors. I suggested taking timed writing exercises by which he could practice spelling and writing as quickly as possible. Lessons learned : I learned that our alphabet is truly not as easy as it looks.
