Topic/Skill: Reading
Teacher Presentation: The instructor started off the lesson
by reviewing the skill that the class had discussed in a previous lesson:
paraphrasing and summarizing. She asked the class to explain this skill and
then described it using various examples. For instance, she asked me to state
three things I had done the following day, and another student had to
paraphrase/summarize what it was that I did. They then completed a reading
assignment with a passage on GM food, first discussing what they knew about the topic. The
instructor then read the passage aloud, underlying any new words.
Classroom Management: The class seemed to be attentive and on-task the
entire time.
Materials: Reading passage handout, projector, whiteboard, dry-erase markers.
Student Participation: The students were asked to discuss
the passage as a class. They then worked in groups of four to summarize or
paraphrase individual paragraphs of the passage for the remainder of the class.
Feedback Provided: Feedback was given when going through the
passage, explaining any new vocabulary, and when walking around to each group,
helping them come up with any other words they could use in their paraphrasing.
Lessons on Teaching: The way she defined new words for the
students was by drawing them on the board and relating them to other words, which I thought was a really fun and effective way to do so. The
pre-lesson activity was also very cool, explaining paraphrasing with real and communicative examples.
