Ford Brodeur TS #2

Date : 9/20/17 12pm-1pm

Location : CIES Center

Topic/Skills : Last minute tutoring on words/presentations

Feedback to the Tutee : I am experimenting with this tutoring session by staying in the computer lab during the lunch break of the CIES students. Dr. Kennell announced to the students that I will be a tutor and I will be available for sessions. The first student showed up around 12:15 asking for translation of words from Spanish into english. I was unfamiliar with the Spanish word "cordillera" which roughly is translated into mountain-range. I simply showed her what it was translated on google translate to help her out. I later saw Mubarak who came in later in the session. He came by asking about his presentation. I looked it over and it seemed pretty good. He was missing information by his partner. I told him that he needed to see his partner in class in order to complete the presentation. He had slight grammatical errors on his presentation outline. It was actually confusing to accurately convey what was wrong grammatically. He had a sentence that read : "He love travel to Switzerland". I did not know how to convey to him that it should be "he loves to travel to Switzerland". Mubarak is a speaking level 2 but the other aspects he is a level 1. So he knew it sounded similar to that but not necessarily close.

Lessons Learned : Students value their lunch dearly. Their free time is very valuable when they are doing things. However, I was able to notice that the students here really cared about their english skills when they came to see me for help. This was the first day of me being able to do this,  so I think on more upcoming lunch schedules it will be better.
